Newton's Birthday Carols!

From: The New York Times Opinionator

The 10 Days of Newton
By OLIVIA JUDSON

On the tenth day of Newton,
My true love gave to me,
Ten drops of genius,
Nine sil ver co-oins,
Eight circling planets,
Seven shades of li-ight,
Six counterfeiters,
Cal-Cu-Lus!
Four telescopes,
Three Laws of Motion,
Two awful feuds,
And the discovery of gravity!

First Pass Project Reviews

Today's meeting was a working research meeting, with club members breaking into focus groups to do a brief Internet search on one of the four projects under consideration, answering the questions:

  • What are our options?
  • What are some key resources / Internet sites?
  • What is the scope of the project?  Can you define a goal / timeline?
  • Can you put together a materials list / estimated budget?
  • What challenges will the project face?

Results will be posted on the club website for all to review and comment on over the next couple weeks.  The club will reconvene after the holiday to further define these projects, secure funding, and determine a path forward on a project-by-project basis.

Next meeting will be Wednesday, January 6, at 3:10 p.m. in Room 3033.

Following the video and demonstration, we returned to our task of choosing which topics and projects we'd most like to investigate this year. Top four vote-getters were:

  • Building a hovercraft machine
  • Exploring lasers
  • Launching a rocket with still/video capabilities
  • Demonstrating superconductor levitation

Actions items for the meeting include:

  1. Mr. Wagner will discuss current model rocket offerings with still picture/video capabilities.
  2. Ethan will investigate potential projects / goals we may want to undertake surrounding lasers.
  3. Christina will talk to Mr. Cermak to learn more about what is involved in building a hovercraft.
  4. Mr. Fullerton will investigate a superconductor levitation demonstration.
  5. Mr. Fullerton will create a science club blog for use by all members.

Next meeting will be Wednesday, 12/16, at 3:10 p.m. in Room 3033. At this meeting, we will not have a formal demonstration or presentation, but instead will split into interest groups to do some basic Internet research, and reconvene at the end of the meeting to share what each group has learned.

Meeting Notes 12/2/09

Following brief introductions (name, background, why you're here), we talked about what we want to build our Xtreme Science Club into, and brainstormed what projects or activities we could undertake.  Club members are going to think about which projects they're most interested in, and make a list of their top 3, which we'll take a look at for next week's meeting (Wednesday, 12/9, in Room 3033 at 3:10).
